Novak Djokovic is a man on a mission at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco this week. The defending champion has reached the Final of his last eleven Masters 1000 events, winning nine of them including two already in 2016. Will Djokovic be able to successfully defend his title in Monte-Carlo? Djokovic is the world number 1, top seed and defending champion. He also has an unbeaten run in Masters 1000 events that stretches back to the Final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati last August. He lost to Roger Federer in the Final there but has been a dominant force since then. This season, he has won four of the five tournaments he has played. Injury forced him to withdraw from the one he didn’t win. Having taken a bit of time off in February, he returned to the tour and won the title in Indian Wells in March. He overcame a scare against American Bjorn Fratangelo in the second round to storm through the rest of the tournament without dropping a set. He then moved on to Miami, where he continued his dominance by lifting the trophy without losing a single set. Coming into this tournament, he has won his last eleven matches all in straight sets. The route to another Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 title isn’t going to be easy for the Serbian, although he is a massive betting favourite to lift the trophy once again. Novak Djokovic took just 65 minutes to beat Malek Jaziri in straight sets to record his 700th tour level win. He becomes only the 12th man since 1968 to win 700 singles matches and celebrated on court after his victory. He was given a celebratory cake and posed for pictures as he celebrated this monumental achievement. He now sits just 13 wins behind Boris Becker, in 11th place on the list, and 62 wins behind Pete Sampras in tenth. It also makes him the third current ATP Tour player to reach the milestone, joining Rafael Nadal (775 wins) and Roger Federer (1,067 wins). One man stood head and shoulders above the rest of the ATP in 2015, completely dominating the tour and breaking several records along the way. That man was Serbian world number 1 Novak Djokovic, with what was statistically the best season of his career and one of the best seasons in tennis history. Starting 2015 in Qatar, Djokovic didn’t have everything all his own way and was knocked out at the Quarter Final stage by Ivo Karlovic. That seemed to fire him up and he proceeded to reach the final of all 15 tournaments he played for the rest of the season. These included all four Grand Slam events, to make Djokovic only the third man in history to achieve this feat. His eleven titles for the season included a record breaking six Masters 1000 events, three Grand Slams and the end of season ATP Tour Finals. On top of all the trophies, he also amassed a record amount of prize money in a calendar year ($21,646,145) and won 31 matches against top ten players. The only other defeats he suffered after the one to Karlovic were against Federer (3 times), Murray and Wawrinka. The man wasn’t quite unbeatable but was as near to it as anyone is going to get in the near future. The question coming into 2016 is, can anyone stop him from having an even better season? Despite our expectations, Serena Williams did not manage to beat Roberta Vinci in the semifinals which means she did not win this edition of US Open. Serena was set as the big favorit in this match so it came as a surprise to everyone. When you compare stats between the two it’s quite obvious why it was such a chock: Vinci has lost 24 matches in 2015 whileas Serena Williams has lost 22 matches in the past 10 year! He has been incredible so far in US Open. However Roberto Bautista-Agut from Spain managed to put a lot of pressure on Novak Djokovic. So much so that he was showing a lot of signs of frustrations as he lost the second set. He actually threw his racket down and the referee gave him a warning. This is the first set that the worlds number one tennis player has lost in this Grand Slam, he did though in the end manage to pull through and won the two last sets, winning the match with 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. “Credit to him for fighting, for making me work,” said Djokovic. “It was a very physical match. I played over three hours, and I’m just glad that I managed to stay tough.” The Serbian must now duel yet another player from Spain at US Open, namely, Feliciano Lopez (18).
