The year’s final Grand Slam is finally upon us! This week we will be able to watch US Open in all its glory. However the tournament has barely begun and already we learn that the Russian tennis queen Maria Sharapova will not be participating due to an leg injury. Maria Sharapova has not played since Wimbledon where she lost to Serena Williams during the semifinals. She had the following to say on her Facebook page: Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year’s US Open, I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong. This is not the first time that Sharapova withdraws herself from US Open. In 2008 it was because of a shoulder operation that hindered her from playing for around 10 months. It has now been quite a while since the rumors started running on about Serena Williams having as much success with her love life as she has on the courts. Even though it was never officially confirmed by both parties, it has almost been a public secret that the 33 year old tennis queen had a relationship with the Canadian rapper Drake. However this weekend at last the confirmation came to us in the form of dewy pictures of the love couple. The pictures are a couple of days old and show the romantic couple having dinner in the fancy and expensive Italian restaurant Sotto in Cincinnati, Ohio. According to TMZ.com, it didn’t take long before the other guests started taking pictures of the celebrity couple with their phones. That exact same day, Serena won the WTA tournament Cincinnati Masters by beating Rumanian Simona Halep in a glorious final match. This counted as the 69th tournament victory so one can understand that the lovely couple had something extra to celebrate. Next week the entire tennis elite is meeting in New York to play in US Open. This has not been Rafael Nadals best season and now, he has been knocked out of yet another tournament. We’re talking of course about the grand ATP Masters in Cincinnati where all the big shots are competing for their ranks before it all goes down at US Open. The left-handed player lost to Feliciano Lopez in three sets with 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, and there wasn’t any silly excuses at the end of the match: I was there during the whole match with the right intensity, with the right attitude, doing the things that I have to do, trying to be more aggressive, trying to go to the net more often, that’s what I did. But today I played against an opponent that played a fantastic match, I think. Lopez is now going up against Roger Federer that has previously won the tournament six times before. Whenever Roger Federer speaks out people in the tennis world always listen diligently. He recently criticiced the australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, who might be a great talent but also quite the big talker. Under a match against French Open winner Stan Wawrinka a microphone picked up on a pretty juicy comment made by the 20 year old Kyrgios. He openly said that Warwinka had had a sexual relationship with tennis player Donna Vekic. This meant a $10.000 fine for the australian player which according to Roger Federer is more than appropiate: We all agree that he definitely crossed the line by a long shot, We’re not used to that kind of talk in tennis. I know in other sports it’s quite common, maybe normal. Not in our sport, really. It’s normal that the tour comes down hard on him and explains to him that it’s not the way forward. We want kids to be wanting to get into this sport because it’s a nice sport. He said to the Cincinatti Enquirer.
